For Indian passport holders, the process is coordinated through the Chinese embassy and the Tibet Foreign Affairs Office. How physically fit do I need to be for this yatra?

A high level of physical fitness is required. While you do not need to be a professional mountaineer, you should have excellent cardiovascular health and stamina. The three-day kora involves trekking for 6-9 hours a day over rugged, uneven terrain at extremely high altitudes where oxygen levels are low. We strongly recommend starting a rigorous fitness regimen involving aerobic exercises, jogging, and hiking at least two to three months before your departure.

What kind of accommodation can I expect?

In Kathmandu, you will stay in comfortable, high-quality hotels. However, once you cross into Tibet and approach the Kailash region, the accommodations become very basic. You will primarily stay in simple guesthouses or mud-brick lodges with shared dormitory-style rooms and communal, often rudimentary, toilet facilities. The focus of this journey is spiritual rather than luxurious, and participants must be prepared for austere living conditions during the kora.

We provide completely pure vegetarian meals throughout the yatra to respect the spiritual nature of the pilgrimage. Our experienced Nepali chefs travel with the group and prepare fresh, nutritious Indian and Nepali vegetarian meals daily. The menu typically includes dal, rice, seasonal vegetables, chapati, and hot soups, which are essential for maintaining energy levels and hydration at high altitudes.

Are medical facilities available during the yatra?

Medical facilities in the remote regions of Tibet are extremely limited. We equip every group with a comprehensive first-aid kit, oxygen cylinders for emergency use, and a portable altitude chamber (Gamow bag). Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and recognizing the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). However, participants must carry their own prescribed medications and consult their doctor before undertaking this journey.

Can I hire a pony or porter for the kora?

Yes, if you feel you cannot complete the 52-kilometer trek on foot, you have the option to hire a yak or a pony, as well as a local Tibetan porter to carry your personal daypack. This must be arranged before starting the kora at Darchen. Please note that the cost of hiring a pony or porter is not included in the standard tour package and must be paid directly in cash (Chinese Yuan).

Packing correctly is crucial for your safety and comfort. We provide a detailed packing checklist upon booking. Layering is key, as temperatures can fluctuate dramatically between the intense daytime sun and freezing nights.

How is the drinking water situation handled?

Staying hydrated is one of the most important factors in preventing altitude sickness. We provide boiled or treated drinking water throughout the journey. We strongly advise against drinking tap water or water from streams. Participants should bring reusable water bottles (preferably insulated thermoses) and hydration bladders. We also recommend bringing your own water purification tablets or a portable water filter for extra precaution.
