Whether you are trekking the Himalayas or exploring the chaotic, beautiful streets of Kathmandu, packing correctly is crucial. Remember: you can buy or rent almost any trekking gear in Thamel (Kathmandu) for a fraction of Western prices.
The Essentials
- Trekking Boots: Do not buy these in Nepal. Bring your own, well-broken-in, waterproof boots to avoid blisters.
- Layered Clothing: Thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, and a waterproof/windproof outer shell.
- Down Jacket: Essential for chilly nights above 3,000m. (Can be rented in Kathmandu).
- Four-Season Sleeping Bag: Teahouses provide blankets, but they are rarely enough in winter or high altitudes. (Can be rented).
