Pokhara is famous for its relaxed Lakeside district, colorful boats on Phewa Lake, and stunning reflections of Mount Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). While these are must-sees, the true magic of Pokhara lies just off the beaten path.
The World Peace Pagoda... and Beyond
Most tourists hike up to the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) for the view. But few continue the hike down the other side toward the Pumdikot Shiva Statue. This massive, newly constructed statue offers even higher panoramic views of the Annapurnas and the entire Pokhara valley, with far fewer tourists.
Matepani Gumba
While tourists flock to the temples around the lake, Matepani Gumba, located on a hill in the east of the city, offers a deeply authentic Tibetan Buddhist experience. The intricate murals, peaceful monks, and lack of commercialization make it a spiritual retreat.
Begnas and Rupa Lakes
Phewa Lake can get crowded. Rent a scooter and drive 45 minutes east to Begnas Lake. It is pristine, quiet, and surrounded by dense forests. You can rent a wooden boat and paddle for hours without seeing another tourist. Just over the ridge lies Rupa Lake, an even more secluded spot surrounded by rural farming villages.
Secret Waterfalls
Skip the commercialized Devi's Fall and head towards the hills of Kaskikot to find unnamed, pristine waterfalls cascading through terraced fields. Ask locals for directions to the smaller streams that feed into the Seti River gorge.
