The Wild West of Nepal
While Chitwan National Park gets all the fame, Bardia National Park in the remote mid-western Terai is where the real wild resides. It is the largest and most undisturbed national park in Nepal's lowlands.
The Kingdom of the Bengal Tiger
Bardia’s claim to fame is its thriving population of wild Royal Bengal Tigers. Because the park sees far fewer visitors than Chitwan, the wilderness feels raw, and tiger sightings are often more frequent and less crowded by other jeeps.
What Else to See
- Wild Asian Elephants: Bardia is home to some of the largest wild elephant herds in Asia.
- Gangetic Dolphins: If you are lucky, you can spot these rare freshwater dolphins swimming in the Karnali River that borders the park.
- Swamp Deer and Crocodiles: The grasslands are filled with Barasingha (swamp deer) and both Gharial and Mugger crocodiles.
The Tharu Culture
The indigenous Tharu people have lived in these jungles for centuries. Visiting Bardia offers a fantastic opportunity to experience their unique culture, mud-hut architecture, and traditional dances in a much less commercialized setting than Chitwan.
If you are willing to make the long journey (a 1-hour flight to Nepalgunj followed by a 2-hour drive, or a 14-hour bus ride from Kathmandu), Bardia rewards you with unparalleled, untamed nature.
