The Jungle of the Terai
When people think of Nepal, they think of mountains. But the southern Terai plains are home to lush, dense subtropical jungles. Chitwan National Park, Nepal's first national park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a global success story for wildlife conservation.
What You Can Spot
- The Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros: Once on the brink of extinction, Chitwan now boasts a population of over 600. You are almost guaranteed to see one!
- Bengal Tigers: While elusive, Chitwan is one of the best places in the world to track wild tigers.
- Gharial Crocodiles: The bizarre, long-snouted, fish-eating crocodiles can be seen sunbathing on the banks of the Rapti river.
- Elephants & Leopards: Wild elephants occasionally roam the park, alongside leopards, sloth bears, and over 500 species of birds.
Safari Options
- Jeep Safari: The best way to cover large distances deep inside the park, maximizing your chances of seeing a tiger.
- Canoe Ride: Drift silently down the Rapti river at dawn to spot crocodiles and rare birds.
- Jungle Walk: For the brave. Walking with an experienced local guide allows you to track animals by their footprints and droppings. It’s an adrenaline-pumping experience to be on foot in tiger territory!
