The Birthplace of Peace
Located in the Rupandehi District of the Terai plains, Lumbini is one of the most important spiritual sites in the world. It is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha.
The Sacred Garden
The heart of Lumbini is the Sacred Garden, home to the Maya Devi Temple, which marks the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha in 623 BC. Inside the temple, you can see the ancient marker stone. Just outside is the sacred pool (Puskarini) where the Queen took a bath before giving birth.
The Monastic Zone
Lumbini has been developed into a massive Master Plan designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange. It features a sprawling Monastic Zone divided by a central water canal.
- East Monastic Zone: Represents Theravada Buddhism, featuring stunning temples built by Thailand, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.
- West Monastic Zone: Represents Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, featuring grand monasteries from China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Germany.
Cycling Through History
The best way to explore the vast Lumbini complex is by renting a bicycle. Biking through the quiet, forested paths between distinct, culturally diverse monasteries from around the world is a surreal, deeply peaceful experience.
