Nepal is often called the land of festivals, with a public holiday almost every week. However, the autumn months of September, October, and November host the grandest of them all: Dashain and Tihar.
Dashain: The Triumph of Good Over Evil
Dashain is the longest and most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar, lasting 15 days. It celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.
- What to Expect: Millions of Nepalese return to their home villages. You'll see massive bamboo swings (Ping) erected in fields, families gathering for feasts, and the exchanging of 'Tika' (a mixture of yogurt, rice, and vermillion) and blessings from elders.
- Traveler Tip: While it's a beautiful cultural experience, public transport can be extremely crowded, and many shops in Kathmandu close for a few days.
